I discovered the porcelain brand Mud Australia in Australia in 2009 when I was traveling around with a Working Holiday Visa. More precisely in Perth at the Aspects of Kings Park gallery shop located in Kings Park and Botanic Garden, which is a showcase of the highest quality contemporary Australian craft and design.
I remember it perfectly because I immediately fell in love with the simple design and nice colours of Mud Australia’s homeware.
I decided to tell you more and maybe make you discover a new homeware brand because the first European store opened in London a few weeks ago.
I didn’t hear about it and discovered it only by chance when wandering in Connaught Village.
Shelley Simpson is the woman behind Mud Australia and her history is pretty interesting. Indeed, she didn’t start out as a ceramicist. But destiny made her renting a house with a woman who had a kick wheel in her back shed. One day, she decided to have a try and discovered that she was good at it. The idea caught on and Mud Australia was finally founded in 1994.
Since then, the company has grown but is still run like a small business.
Each piece is handmade in the Sydney factory by a staff of professional and in-house ceramicists.
Made from Limoges porcelain, sourced directly from France, the pigment is tinted through the porcelain clay to provide colour-depth not available from surface glazing. It means that if a piece chips or breaks, the exposed portion isn’t white but coloured.
Clear glaze is then hand brushed to the interior of each piece, leaving the exterior with a vitrified stone-like surface that becomes smooth with handling.
Mud Australia actually offers 70 shapes in 17 colours. All pieces are complementary which means that there is an infinity of possible combinations and that everybody’s Mud Australia dinner set is unique! I particularly like the mix of pink and slate elements.
Thanks to this particularity, Mud Australia porcelain fits in any interior. It also fits for any occasion as it’s solid enough to be used everyday and refined enough to be used in more formal dinners.
And if you weren’t convinced yet to renew your tableware, the best is now coming: Mud Australia porcelain is oven, microwave and dishwasher safe!
