Daunt Books is an independent chain of bookshops in London founded by James Daunt in 1990.
There are 6 shops located across the city in Marylebone High Street, Chelsea, Holland Park, Cheapside, Hampstead and Belsize Park.
The shops have a large selection of fiction and non-fiction books and an even bigger selection of travel books on which I’ll focus.
Indeed, although Daunt Books aren’t strictly travel bookshops, there are specialized in travel books.
And the way these travel books are arranged is particularly interesting. For a same country, guides (obviously) but also phrase books, history books, fiction and non-fiction books are gathered together. I find this arrangement very practical and clever.
The selection of guides is wide to please a large audience, from Lonely Planet to Wallpaper with many in between.
If you plan to visit Daunt Books, I would recommend to go to the bookshop in Marylebone High Street as it’s the most impressive.
Entering in Daunt Books Marylebone is like stepping back in time.
The bookshop is housed in a beautiful Edwardian building.
The 2 front doors lead to the fiction and non-fiction books.
And a small corridor at the back of the shop leads to the travel section spread over 3 levels!
The ground floor is dedicated to Europe.
I was very impressed by the well stocked Scandinavian section, which is most of the time neglected.
And as you can see, the Jo Nesbø‘s books aren’t outdone.
The mezzanine is dedicated to the United Kingdom.
And the lower floor is dedicated to Asia, America, Africa and Australasia.
Chairs and tables are dispersed in the shop in case you need some time to make up your mind.
Time seems to stop every time I visit Daunt Books in Marylebone and I almost always leave with a book, or several.
And the ice on the cake is that when you buy several books, they are handed to you in a nice cotton tote bag!
So next time you need to buy a travel book in London, go to Daunt Books to live a true experience and support an independent bookshop.
