From Blogger to WordPress.org

Welcome to my new blog!

Last week, I decided to change of blog platform to be able to customise my blog as I wanted and to have my own domain name.

Mia, from the blog Trucs de Blogeuse (in French only), gave me the will but also some advices to do it. Luckily she was here because I didn’t even know that there was a difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com!

When I started my blog last year, I didn’t check the different platforms and created it on Blogger because it was the only one that I’ve heard about.Blogger Cess I found it quite easy to use but it didn’t allow me to develop my blog in the direction that I wanted it to take. Only WordPress.org would allow me to do it by customising the design and the functionalities.

Changing of blog platform requires only 5 steps and looks quite simple on paper.
All you need is to:
1- Select a web host and create a domain name
2- Create an account on WordPress.org
3- Import the old blog
4- Select a theme
5- Customise the new blog

Thanks to Mia, I was able to do the 3 first steps without any difficulties.

But I didn’t imagine the 2 last steps to be SO complicated!
These 2 steps are closely linked because the customisation depends of the theme that you select.
And the selection of the right theme is a nightmare because the choice is extremely large.
Moreover, as the customisation is a personal part, you can’t expect to find all the answers to your questions!

I started with a free theme but I was quickly blocked: I couldn’t customise my blog as I wanted without touching to the codes. I tried to do it and read many articles but it was like reading Chinese!

I was on the point to give up when I understood that if I didn’t want to touch to the codes, I would have to find a theme close enough to what I wanted to only make some changes.
And, of course, the chances are high that you’ll have to buy a premium theme. But it’s not very expensive (I paid mine $43.00) and it really worths it.

So, once that you’re willing to pay for a premium theme, you’ll still have to find the right theme among thousands and thousands!
And it can be very frustrating when you exactly know what you want but you don’t know where to look.
After a few unsuccessful attempts, I finally looked for a theme on ThemeForest simply because this is where Mia found her.
To give you an idea, I was looking for a magazine theme and ThemeForest offers at the moment more than 944!
After a few hours, I finally found the perfect theme for my blog: Florence, a clear magazine theme with soft colours and great functionalities.

From that point, the customisation was much easier as I just had to add some plugin to make it mine. And when I had a question, I could contact the support dedicated theme of my theme who always replied within 24 hours.WordPress.org Cess

However, I soon realised that the layout of the 90 posts that I had written on Blogger had changed… It was very annoying and it took me ages to fix them one by one.

This is why, based on my experience, I would recommend to directly start a blog on WordPress.org.
Indeed, starting a blog is always a bit difficult but if you start on the right platform, it will avoid you to have to learn a second time how the platform works!

At the moment, I’m still learning how WordPress.org works so please be gentle and let me know if you spot any mistake or weird thing.

And by the way, what do you think of the new design?
