The Peninsula Hong Kong is one of my favorite hotels in the world and I hope to have the opportunity to work there one day.
So when we were in Hong Kong, I asked my boyfriend if we could have a look.
The main entrance is impressive, particularly when the Rolls-Royces (14 in total) are parked in front. After being greeted by one of the most iconic doorman in the world, we were introduced in the majestic lobby. We wandered around and then headed to the Concierge to enquire about the different outlets. We were given a leaflet with all the information concerning the hotel, which include a map of the arcades located in the basement, the ground floors and the mezzanine where all the top luxury brands have a boutique.
We both agreed that it would be a shame to leave Hong Kong without having experienced the top of Asian hospitality and decided to come back to taste the cocktails at the Felix Bar for my boyfriend and the Afternoon Tea in the Lobby for me. I was over the moon, as I didn’t expect it at all!
The Afternoon Tea is served daily from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Due to its success, outside guests don’t have the possibility to make a reservation. We arrived at 1:30 pm and were only half-surprised to see that there was already a queue of about 20-25 persons.
While my boyfriend queued, our friend and I decided to explore the arcades. I particularly wanted to show her the Chanel watch and the Louis Vuitton bag that I would love to own one day.
We entered the Louis Vuitton boutique and the bag of my dreams was in display just in front of us. I would never have dared to do it in France but I asked the shop assistant if I could try the bag. Which bag? The “Capucines” bag in black with a fuchsia interior. I tried both size: the large one (GM) and the smaller one (MM). The large is definitely too big for me but the smaller has just the perfect size. It’s a bit heavy but it’s the weight of quality! This is the kind of bad that give you elegance and confidence when you carry it. Definitely the it-bag I want!
Then, as if one purpose, the Chanel watch boutique was facing Louis Vuitton. This time, I wasn’t at all embarrassed to ask the shop assistant if I could try the “J12” white watch in medium size, the simple one. The watch is very heavy because it’s in ceramic but also because it’s very big to allow to be adjusted to the size of each wrist by removing the unnecessary links. To try it is to adopt it!
When we came back to the queue, my boyfriend was on the third position and 10 minutes later it was our turn to be seated
The wait took approximately one hour. Don’t hesitate to ask Concierge for a free Wifi login and the time to go faster.
We had the chance to be given a very nice table near the window with a perfect view on The Lobby Strings.
The price is less expensive than in London, for the same range of hotels. However, as it isn’t possible to make a reservation, guests can’t ask for a free refill in the aim to satisfy as many guests as possible, which is totally understandable.
I chose the Peninsula Afternoon tea, one of the Peninsula’s signature blend. Delicious of course!
And when the tiered silver cake stand was brought to the table, I must say that I was very impressed. It looked even better than the Afternoon Teas I tried in London for 2 reasons:
-The finger sandwiches were mixed with savoury pastries
-There were 3 examples of each pastry, which means that we didn’t have to share. Indeed, I really hate when there is a nice assortment of cakes with only one example of each.
After the visual aspect, it was finally the long-awaited moment to taste. Everything was excellent and the scones were the softer I ever tried.
We enjoyed ourselves for more than 2 hours, then it was time to leave to allow people still in the queue to finally be seated.
But before we left, we took a picture with the doorman.
It was an experience I’ll never forget and I recommend to all the persons planning a trip to Hong Kong to reserve an afternoon in their crazy busy sight-seeing and shopping schedule to take the time to indulge an Afternoon Tea at The Peninsula.
-The dress code is smart casual so avoid flip-flops, beach sandals, plastic footwear, shorts and sleeveless shirt (for gentlemen) for not being turned out.
-If you need to refresh yourself before or after the Afternoon Tea, the toilet’s amenities include a hairspray, a hairbrush and a bottle of Eau Dynamisante by Clarins.
